Ballynafeigh Community Centre, Belfast
It is over a decade since the Ulster Team Championship was last played. The first (1985) and last (2004/5) editions of the previous series had been all-play-all events. From 1986 to 2000 and again in 2002 the format used was a knock-out. All these events were played at a normal time-limit.
In 2001, 2003 and 2004 a hybrid format was adopted. After an all-play-all rapidplay preliminary qualifier, the top two teams played a double-round final at normal time-limits. So it is a moot point whether this 2016 event should be seen as a revival or as a completely new event.
A curious scoring system was adopted. In the Belfast & District Leagues, teams are awarded 2 bonus points for a match win (1 each for a drawn match) in addition to the individual game points. Ostensibly the same system was used in the 2016 Ulster Team Championship - however 200 bonus points were awarded for a team win and 100 for a drawn match. My suspicion is that the eccentric scoring format was because the UCU wanted to use match points as the primary scoring system, but the UCU Database was set up for the hybrid system used in the B&D Leagues, so that the individual game points became irrelevant, except as a tie-breaker.
The official final standings can be found at the UCU website but I have set out below a more conventional method of scoring below (the two methods inevitably produce the same order of placings).
