In Division 1 each team played home and away against all their opponents. However the other Divisions had a more complicated format.
After the nine lower-tier teams had all played eight matches, a Divisional split then occurred, with the three best teams at that point carrying on in Division 2. The teams holding positions four to six went into Division 3 while the bottom 3 teams were placed into Division 4 - making it the first time there had been a Division 4 title since the mid-1990s.
In each of the three lower-tier Divisions, teams carried forward the points already earned and then played home and away against their two opponents in their respective Divisions to produce a final overall score.
