Williamson Shield and Henderson Cup 2000

QUB Staff Common Room
30 September-1 October 2000

In recent years, a second tournament for Intermediate and Junior players has usually been run alongside the Williamson Shield. For the first time, however, the winner of this subsidiary tournament was to receive a trophy - the Henderson Cup, previously awarded to the winner of the Intermediate section of the City of Belfast Championships.

On the right is Ron Henderson, former President of the Ulster Chess Union,
competing in the competition named after him, the Henderson Cup - which,
incidentally he has won three times! His opponent is Alex Beckett, former
honorary secretary of the UCU. It seems that Alex is in aggressive
mood - if my eyes don't deceive me, he's played the King's Gambit.
